Diego ForlanUruguayan star footballer Diego Forlan, the golden ball winner in the recent World Cup in South Africa, described his goal against Germany in the showpiece event as his best.

"My best goal was the one against Germany. Every time you play for your country it is special," the 31-year-old Forlan, who was here to take part in a soccer talent hunt show to be aired by the Mahuaa Bangla channel, told reporters.

Uruguay lost 2-3 to Germany in the third place play-off with Forlan hitting the crosspiece from a freekick in the 90+3rd minute.

"The German players were tall. I tried to hit it near the goalkeeper post. I saw, it hit the cross," the Uruguayan sensation said.

He said he was happier to win the Golden Ball than the Golden Boot won by Thomas Mueller of Germany.

"I had a chance to win the Golden Boot in Europe. I was nominated with other players. I knew it would be difficult. Others had opportunity to play and had a chance to win. I was really happy they gave it to me.

"I scored five goals. FIFA sees the statistics and the timing of the goals. I was happy to be one of the top strikers," he said.

"Of course, I needed to work hard. I was not thinking about recognition. You need to be focussed. I was enjoying my career. I will try to continue doing it this way," he added.

Forlan said his team needed to remain motivated to qualify for the next World Cup.

"The next World Cup is quite far. Four years is a long time. We have to qualify and stay motivated. We will have a tough qualifying from South Africa. First, we need to see who is going to coach us next," the former Manchester United striker said.

Asked why he chose the Spanish League after playing in the English Premier League for Manchester United in 2002, the Atletico Madrid striker said, "I was not getting to play matches, mostly I was on the bench. Then I chose Spain. Every game I got to play 90 minutes."

Forlan said he still have three years contract left with Atletico Madrid and would like to play for them.

Asked whether he would like to shift to Manchester United, he said, "It is not me to decide. I am happy to be with Madrid. I will try to complete the contract."

On why Uruguay was not producing stars, he said, "I disagree. We are doing quite well in the European leagues."

Asked about his knowledge of Indian football, he said "No idea. Here there is more cricket and no football."

"We are a country of just three million people. This is something rare for a nation with just 3 million population. Population in India is more than a billion," he added.
