Enqvist replaces Wilander as Sweden Davis Cup coach

Former world number four Thomas Enqvist was named as Sweden's Davis Cup captain on Thursday, replacing Mats Wilander who announced his retirement from the job earlier this week.

Thomas Enqvist"Of course, it's an honour to be given this assignment and a fantastic heritage to take care of," Enqvist said in a statement on the Swedish tennis federation's website (www.tennis.se).

"I hope my experiences as a player will come in handy and also look forward to making the link between the (senior) national team and the junior... players," added Enqvist.

He played Davis Cup from 1995 to 2004 with a 15-11 win/loss record and helped win the trophy in 1997 and 1998.

A winner of 19 ATP titles, Enqvist reached his only grand slam final at the 1999 Australian Open [ Images ] where he lost to Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Sweden, who beat Romania in their Davis Cup World group playoff last month, face Argentina in the first round in March.
