CVC whips up a formula for making India an economic superpowerChief Vigilance Commissioner N Vittal today called for according high priority to tackle corruption for increasing productivity in the country and enabling the Indian industry achieve competitiveness in the global market. Delivering the keynote address at the 40th national convention organised by the Delhi chapter of the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineers in New Delhi, Vittal said the statutory position of the CVC and the initiative being taken by him to insist on computerisation of banks' functioning to exchange information on corrupt persons and frauds in the banking industry would increase productivity substantially on the economic front. He said adequate funds should be provided to develop human resources and increase national productivity. Education should be given high priority. The awarding of the Nobel Prize to Prof Amartya Sen was perhaps an index of the recognition of the fact that mere economic development would not be enough and what we need is improving the quality of life of the people by focussing on improving human resource,'' he added. At the national level, there had to be a widespread realisation that the basic physical, financial and human resources must be used to the optimum extent to help India emerge as an economic superpower, Vittal said. Vittal said he would favour total internal liberalisation. He said the country could become an economic superpower in the 21st century through organisational transformation and by improving national productivity and competitiveness. Stressing the need for creating external environment by which productivity and improved performance become a necessity, the CVC said, ''We must go for total internal liberalisation. We will be creating all over the country, a common approach to improving productivity,'' he added. UNI |
