Rudisha set the first world record in athletics at the 2012 Olympic Games, winning the men's 800m in 1 minute, 40.91 seconds.

Rudisha became the first man to break the 800m world record three times, and broke the 800m world record at an Olympic Games for the first time in 36 years - since Alberto Juantorena of Cuba did so in 1976.

Rudisha is the first reigning world champion to win the men's 800m at the Olympic Games. His gold is Kenya's fourth Olympic title in this discipline, all since 1988.

Nijel Amos won Botswana's first medal at the Olympic Games in any sport.

Timothy Kitum of Kenya won bronze to become, at age 17-263, the youngest ever medallist in this event in the Olympic Games, breaking a 116-year-old record. Dimitrios Golemis of Greecewas the previous youngest at 19-131 when he won bronze in 1896.

At 18-147, Amos is also younger than Golemis and thus becomes the second youngest medallist in this event at the Olympic Games.

All eight runners in this event ran under 1:44, with seven of them running personal best times.
