Orthopaedic surgeon Amir Aziz was arrested from his Ghurki hospital and was being questioned by Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pakistani officials at an unknown location, reports said on Tuesday.
Dr Aziz, who was questioned in the past for treating Al Qaeda and Taliban men during his visits to Kabul, is also suspected of having helped the two groups make the deadly biological agent, anthrax.
There was, however, no official comment on his arrest.
Aziz, who is in his early 40s, is known to have close ties with the former Taliban regime and was a regular visitor to Afghanistan when the Taliban was in power. He was also a supporter of the Afghan mujahideen during the war against the former Soviet Union.
A religious man, Aziz operated several free clinics in Lahore and was also a provincial health adviser to the federal government until General Pervez Musharraf took over in a coup in October 1999.
