The United States state department said it could not give a time frame to confirm that the human remains discovered by Pakistani police were those of the slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl but said it was in 'close contact' with Pakistani officials to determine the same.
The Pakistani police have discovered remains, which they believe to be those of Daniel Pearl but further forensic testing, including matching of dental records, will be required to establish the identity of the remains, state department spokesman Richard Boucher said.
Boucher declined to say exactly how much time the process would take.
He said that officials from the US consulate general in Karachi were present at the scene when the remains were exhumed.
The consulate and the state department will also remain in close touch with Pearl's family to keep them informed of developments, he said.
Developments like the establishment of Pearl's remains and the location of the site of his murder would help in bringing his murderers to justice, Boucher said, adding US law enforcement experts in Karachi were working with their Pakistani counterparts for the same.
