- The Darjeeling Hill Train, the first hill railway to be built in India, runs on a two foot gauge drawn by a 100-year-old steam engine. The train links New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling and covers the 86 km picturesque journey in seven and a half hours.
The train has first class and second class coaches. The one way first class fare is Rs 200 per head. The one way second class fare is Rs 20 per head.
New Jalpaiguri station has regular trains to and from Calcutta, Bombay and New Delhi.
The Darjeeling Mail connects Calcutta to New Jalpaiguri and the journey takes 12 hours.
The Dadar-Guwahati Express connects Bombay to New Jalpaiguri and the journey takes 42 hours.
The Rajdhani Express connects New Delhi to New Jalpaiguri and the journey takes 23 hours.
- The Nilgiri Mountain Train starts its 46 km journey from Mettupalayam and takes four and a half hours to reach Ooty. The train passes through 16 tunnels and offers scenic views of the forest covered hills and tea plantations.
The one way first class fare is Rs 173. The one way second class fare is Rs 35 per head.
The Nilgiri Express connects Mettupalayam to Madras and takes about 10 hours.
- The Shivalik Rail Motor Car links Kalka to Shimla, once the summer capital of India. The train takes six hours to climb the 96 kms journey through the foothills of the Himalayas and passes 107 tunnels and over 850 bridges.
The Shivalik Rail Motor Car runs twice a day and halts at Barog station on its way to Shimla.
The train has a seating capacity of 131 passengers.
The one way fare is Rs 305 per head and includes meals. The return fare is Rs 540 per head.
The Shatabdi Express, the Himalayan Queen and the Ekta Express connects New Delhi with Kalka. The Howrah-Kalka Mail connects Calcutta with Kalka.
- The Matheran Hill Train takes about an hour and a half to climb the 21 kms journey to Matheran, a vehicle free hill station close to Bombay.
The four coach train runs thrice a day from Neral to Matheran. However this service is not available during the monsoon.
The one way second class fare is Rs 35 per head.
Neral is on the Bombay-Pune line and is easily accessible by local trains from Bombay.
