Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal Built in 1799, the Hawa Mahal -- or Palace of the Winds -- is one of Jaipur's major landmarks. Actually, it is little more than a facade. Situated on the main street of the old city, it was originally built to enable ladies of the royal household to watch everyday life go by.

The pink, semioctagonal and delicately honeycombed sandstone windows give an excellent view of the city. Built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh it is part of the City Palace complex. The street below is a good shopping area for Rajasthani clothes, shoes, jewellery etc. All at a good price.
