One of the highest motorable roads in the world is the 480 odd kilometres of macadam stretching between Manali and Leh. The road winds up from Manali into the Great Himalayan Range, across barren windswept plateaus, and through the Rohtang pass and the Baralacha pass to Leh, at times ascending soaring heights of 5,328 metres.
