The beachfront has plenty of stalls, clustered about the lighthouse
offering Indian handicrafts on sale. There is another bunch of
shops at the gates of the Ashok. However Kovalam beach is not
recommended address to buy a Kashmiri carpet or a Tibetan knick-knack,
either in terms of price or variety. But carvings, wood and metal
crafts, carpets are available.
A better alternative is to drive into Trivandrum. On MG Road try
Kairali, opposite the Secretariat (the Kerala govt crafts emporium),
Natesan Antique Arts, Gift Corner. Otherwise visit the SMS Handicrafts,
also government run, behind the Secretariat. For handloom cloth
try the Khadi Gramudyog located between Pazhavangadi and Overbridge
junction. Connemara Market at the top of MG Road has a wide range
of goods include the essentials and facilities for tailoring.
