Susmita Roy steals limelight

Kolkata girl Susmita Sinha Roy held centre stage before emerging champion in the grueling heptathlon, despite earning no points in the javelin throw, on the second day of the 13th Federation Cup National Athletics Championships at the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata on Friday.

Except javelin, where Susmita's throw did not peg into the ground, she won the other six events for a total of 4,891 points.

M P Sinimal of Kerala finished a close second with a tally of 4,887 points.

Leelavathi of Tamil Nadu, who also did not earn any points in the javelin, finished third with 4,261 points.

Susmita was trailing Sinimol till the 800m but won the final event to seal victory.

In the other events of the day, Army athletes dominated the 3000m steeplechase with Om Prakash winning in 9 minutes 6.13 seconds.

Fellow-armyman Francis Sagayaraj won the 800m in a timing of one minute 48.27 seconds.

P G Nagraj from Jharkhand was the fastest man of the meet, winning the 100m in 10.69 seconds.

The hammer throw went to Nirbhay Singh from Uttar Pradesh.

The hosts got their second gold medal when Y Baladevi emerged winner in the 20 km walk, clocking one hour 48 minutes and 40.99 seconds.

In the women's pole vault, the title went to N Madhusili Devi of Uttar Pradesh while Gurpreet Kaur of Haryana won the gold in the javelin throw clearing 46.01m.

The women's 800m went to Sinimol of Jharkhand while Poonam Tomar earned the first gold medal for Delhi becoming the fastest woman in the meet by winning the 100m in 12.16 seconds.
