Serbian teenager Novak Djokovic reached the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open on Wednesday but top seed Nikolay Davydenko was knocked out by French qualifier Olivier Patience.

Djokovic, number five in the ATP rankings, beat Spanish qualifier Santiago Ventura 6-2, 6-2 in just under one hour. The 19-year-old will next meet Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the clay court championship.

Davydenko, ranked number four in the world and last year's runner-up, lost 7-5, 6-1 in just under 80 minutes to Patience.

France's Paul-Henri Mathieu, who won his third ATP career title last week in Casablanca, extended his winning streak to seven matches after beating Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 6-2, 6-1.

Spain's Tommy Robredo beat compatriot Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-3 and will now meet countryman Alberto Martin in the second round.

WASKE IN MUNICH QUARTERS

Unseeded German Alexander Waske beat compatriot Daniel Brands 7-6, 7-6 to advance to the quarter-finals of the $416,000 Munich Open on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old, looking to become the first German winner of the tournament since Michael Stich in 1994, had already knocked out sixth-seeded Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in straight sets in the first round.

Waske faces fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, a finalist at the 2006 Australian Open, in the quarter-finals. The Cypriot struggled on Wednesday to beat Matthias Bachinger of Germany 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Third-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia beat unseeded Benjamin Becker of Germany 7-6, 7-6 while Juergen Melzer of Austria, seeded eighth, defeated Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

Top-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany was eliminated in his first match on Tuesday by Sebastien Grosjean of France. Last year's winner Oliver Rochus of Belgium was beaten late on Monday by Melzer.
