Mido misses out on African Cup

Tottenham Hotspur striker Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam has been left out of a 23-man squad named by Egypt coach Hassan Shehata on Tuesday for the weekend's African Nations Cup qualifier against Mauritania.

Mido sustained an ankle injury during his team's 3-1 win over Watford in the English premier league on Saturday, the Egypt Football Association said.

Shehata recalled Shady Mohamed, captain of African Champions League winners Al Ahli, for the first time in four years and added two uncapped players in Tersana goalkeeper Ahmed Saad and Harras Al Hodoud midfielder Abdelsalam Nagah to his selection.

Egypt host Mauritania in their Group Two qualifier on Sunday. Egypt lead the group with four points, one more than Mauritania.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Essam Al Hadari (Al Ahli), Abdelwahed El Sayed (Zamalek), Ahmed Saad (Tersana)

Defenders: Mahmoud Fathallah (Ghazl Al Mahalla), Amir Azmi Megahed (Al Shabab, Saudi Arabia), Shady Mohamed (Al Ahli), Sayed Moawad, Hani Said (both Ismaili), Ibrahim Said (Rizespor, Turkey)

Midfielders: Hosni Abd Rabou (Ismaili), Ahmed Fathi (Sheffield United, England), Omar Gamal (Ismaili), Hossam Ghali (Tottenham Hotspur, England), Ahmed Hassan (Anderlecht, Belgium), Mohamed Hommos (Ismaili), Abdelsalam Nagah (Harras Al Hodoud), Farag Shalabi (ENPPI), Mohamed Shawki (Al Ahli)
