It was a bright Sunday for India as it moved into the quarter-finals of the World Men's Team Squash Championship for the first time by beating Wales, even as arch rivals Pakistan bit the dust at the hands of the Dutch.
With India's top two players Saurav Ghosal and Ritwik Bhattacharya exerting every sinew and bringing their best performance, the 10th seeded hosts scored a 3-0 win over Wales, boasting off higher seeded stars.
Pakistan went down tamely to the Netherlands 0-3 despite having highly rated international stars.
In the quarter-finals on Monday, India will lock horns with top seeded Egypt, while the Netherlands will take on England.
The hosts are sure to improve their world ranking to between fifth and eigth before the championships ends on December 12.
In the other quarter-finals, Australia takes on Canada and France fights Malaysia.
After Bhattacharya scored an emphatic 3-0 win over David Evans, who had retired from the PSA Circuit but helps his country in international events, Ghosal was equally classy as he mixed his pace to get the better of the World No 25 Alex Gough, who retired trailing 1-2 in games.
Ghosal lost the first game narrowly on extra points 10-11 (1-3) but fought back with tenacious and intelligent play to win the next two. Gough, who had medical attention for his hamstring problem on left leg, could not sustain the pain and conceded the match 11-10 7-11 3-11.
In the last and third match, Siddarth Suchde got the better of Jethro Binns 11-8, 7-11, 11-2.
In the first match, Ritwik Bhattachrya brought about his best game in the recent past against David Evans. His excellent moves and decision to mostly play behind Evans, who kept up a fast pace, helped him score vital points.
From 7-4, Bhattacharya rose to 9-6 before winning the game. The second was going tough with Evans also changing his tactics. Trailing 2-5, Evans made it 6-all, 8-8 and then 10-10. Bhattacharya had the turning point when Evans was serving for the game (11-10).
After a brief rally, Bhattacharya came up with a superb and unreachable overhead forehand return to level the score and then maintained the momentum to score the required two points for a 2-0 lead.
In the third game, Evans, who rarely plays in the PSA circuit matched the Indian until 6-all. Here, Bhattacharya gained a point on 'stroke' and his rival hit the tin twice. With Bhattacharya missing a return close to the left glass, Evans served and involved Bhattacharya in a rally. The Indian closed out the rally and the match in an excellent fashion.
