After proving their mettle in the recent National Championship, Punjab and Sind Bank added another feather to their cap by winning the men's title in the Surjit hockey tournament in Jalandhar on Wednesday.

PSB defeated title sponsors Indian Oil Corporation 2-0 in the final to win the prestigious tournament for the eighth time.

The bankmen took hold of the match from the start when Mandeep Singh sounded the board from a penalty-corner in the 10th minute.

Seven minutes later, PSB earned another penalty-corner and Baljit Singh Chandi made no mistake (2-0).

Indian Oil earned two penalty-corners, in sixth and 41st minutes, but failed to convert both.

In the second half, PSB maintained their grip over the game and did not give any chance to their opponents.

Northern Railway clinch women's crown

Northern Railway clinched the women's title for a record seventh time, defeating Central Railway 6-4 via the tie-breaker in a pulsating final.

The winners were awarded Rs 31,000 while the runners-up got Rs 21,000.

Northern Railway's Pritam was declared player of the tournament.

The nail-biting final, which ended 4-4 in regulation time, saw Central take an early lead in the second minute through a penalty-corner conversion by Usha (1-0).

Northern Railway equalised in the 16th minute when Gurpreet Kaur converted a penalty-corner (1-1).

Pritam put Northern ahead the 24th minute (2-1) while Balwinder Kaur made it 3-1 in the 31st.

At the lemon break, Northern Railway led 3-1.

The second half witnessed the teams playing attacking hockey.

In the 41st minute, Usha reduced the margin for Central Railway (2-3).

They could have equalised in the 59th minute but squandered a penalty-stroke.

However, Central made amends when Sarita scored a field goal in the 62nd minute.

Northern surged ahead in the 63rd minute through Balwinder Kaur but Central again equalised in the 69th minute through Ranjeeta (4-4).

With no extra-time provision for the final, the match went into the tie-breaker.

Ramneek and Monika scored for Northern in the tie-breaker while Central's Manju, Ranjeeta, Usha and Elena missed the target.
