Ghamanda Ram sets 800m record

Ace athlete Ghamanda Ram overcame an upset stomach to set a meet record in the 800 metres on the second day of the Federation Cup Athletics Championships in Delhi on Wednesday.

The Indian armyman timed one minute 47.74 seconds.

Ghamanda broke the three-old-year record of P S Primesh of Kerala (1:49.16 seconds) by a huge margin to claim gold. He finished ahead of Jaskiran Singh of Haryana (1:52.40) and Satnam Singh of Punjab (1:52.75).

Joseph AbrahamIn the men's 400m hurdles, Joseph Abraham of CRPF (50.50 seconds) and Gurpreet Singh of Punjab Police (50.81) bettered the previous meet record of Prasad Reddy (51.24), set in 2003.

Abraham missed the National mark by 0.07 seconds.

The men's triple jump produced the second best performance by an Indian when Amarjit Singh of Punjab cleared 16.58 metres.

Mohinder Singh Gill's 34-year-old National record of 16.79m is now under threat from Amarjit Singh and Ranjith Maheswary, who both went beyond 16.40 metres.

Asian silver medalist S Shanthi of Tami Nadu could not improve on her National record in the 3000m steeplechase but settled for a meet record of 10:44.76 seconds.

Pinki Pramanik registered her third straight win of the season with another excellent timing of 2:05.05 seconds to take the women's 800m gold.

Shalin Joseph of Kerala won the 400m women's hurdles with a timing of 59.69 seconds. Harini Chandrashekhara (59.86s) of Karnataka was second while promising Pooja Jakhar of Delhi was third in 1:01.29.

200m: 1. P. Muthusamy (TN) 21.81 seconds,  2. Parameshwara (Karnataka 22.02), 3. S. Barna Bass (TN) 22.02.

Pole vault: 1. Gajanan Upadhaya (UP) 4.90 metres,  2. Shyju (Indian Army) 4.60m, 3. Pawan Kumar (Delhi) 4.60m.

3000 Steeplechase: 1. Ram Bahadur Subba (BSF) 9:03.84 seconds, 2. Om Prakash (Indian Army) 9:10.99, 3. Mahesh Kumar (MP) 9:11.18.

Discus Throw: 1. Harpreet Singh (Delhi) 52.78 metres, 2. Vipendra Singh (UP) 51.20,  3. Jaiveer Singh (Rajasthan) 50.62.

800m: 1. Ghamanda Ram (Indian Army) 1:47.74 seconds (NMR),  2. Jaskaran Singh (Haryana) 1:52.40,  3. Satnam Singh (Punjab) 1:52.75.

400m hurdles: 1. Joseph Abraham (CRPF) 50.50 (NMR), 2. Gurpreet Singh (Punjab Police) 50.81, 3. A. Jayasankar (TN) 52.82.

Triple Jump: 1. Amarjeet Singh (Punjab) 16.58 metres (NMR), 2. Sushanth Bangera (Mah) 15.65m.

Women:
200m: 1. H.M. Joythi (Karnataka) 24.27 seconds;  2. Babita Singh (Maharashtra) 24.56,  3. Rakhi Saha (W Bengal) 24.60.

Hammer Throw: 1. Archana Bara (Bihar) 54.43 metres,  2. Ritu Rani (UP) 52.53, 3. Ushma Daryan (UP) 51.60.

3000 Steeplechase: 1. S. Shanthi (TN) 10:44.76 seconds (NMR),  2. K. Maheswari (TN) Tamil Nadu 11:48.87, 3. Asha Rani (Punjab Police) 11:49.17.

800m: 1 Pinki Pramanik (W Bengal) 2:05.05, 2. Sutapa Das (W Bengal) 2:11.21, 3. B. Venkat Laxmi (AP) 2:11.74.

400m hurdles: 1. Shalini Joseph (Kerala) 59.69 seconds;  2. Harini Chandrashekara (Karnataka) 59.86,  3. Pooja Jakhar (Delhi) 1:01.29.
