Indian eves win SAF badminton team gold

India's women shuttlers won the team event to add another gold to the kitty even as the men set up a final with Pakistan in the team competition of the badminton event at the ninth SAF Games in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Maintaining their momentum, the Indian women steamrolled Sri Lanka, winning both the singles through B R Meenakshi and Trupti Margunde.

Manjusha Kanwar and Fathima Nazneen completed the match to claim the gold.

After winning these matches, India gave a walkover and did not play the remaining matches.

Pakistan and Nepal will play for the bronze medal tomorrow.

In their semi-final encounter this morning, the Indian men had little difficulty in disposing of Nepal, winning both the singles and doubles. After winning the match 3-0, India did not play the remaining two matches giving walkovers for a final victory margin of 3-2.

National champion Abhin Shyam Gupta did not strain much against Nepal's Pashupati Paneru while winning 15-3, 15-4.

In the second singles, Chetan Anand defeated Balram Thapa 15-9, 15-4.

India sealed a berth in the final when Markose Bristow and Rupesh Kumar beat Pankaj Chand and Kiran Thapa 15-6, 15-4.

Pakistan had made the final yesterday after their 3-2 win over Sri Lanka.

Results women's team final:

India beat Sri Lanka (B R Meenakshi bt Renu Chandrika 11-7, 11-5; T Margude bt Arun Dishanth 11-3, 11-4; M Kanwar and F Nazneen beat Thilini Jayasinghe and Amali Amarasinghe 15-2, 15-0).
