Abhay Karketta struck a fine hat-trick as Muslim Insititute crushed Student Athletic Club 8-0 in a preliminary round match of the Indian Oil Servo 109th All India Beighton Cup hockey tournament in Kolkata on Saturday.

Saroj Dung Dung, Abdul Qadir, Utpal Das, Peter Leonard and Parvez were the other scorers for the winners who established a 6-0 lead by the breather in the completely one sided encounter at the East Bengal ground.

Student AC, on the other hand, looked completely in the woods for almost the entire stretch of the match, failing to earn even a single penalty corner as against seven gained by Muslim Institute.

Institute drew first blood in as early as the seventh minute when Dung Dung sounded the board by latching on to an Abdul Qadir pass giving no chance to rival custodian Intezar Ahmed.

Six minutes later, Karketta -- who hails from Rourkela in Orissa -- made the scoreline 2-0 with a delectable flick following a back pass by Amit Xavier.

Institute kept up the pressure and Karketta found the target again in the 19th minute following a combined move, and completed his hattrick two minutes later with another field strike.

Qadir then showed fine opportunism to push home from close in the 23rd minute as Institute went ahead 5-0.

Institute continued the relentless onsalught and were awarded a penaly stroke in the 25th minute and Utpal Das had little difficulty in converting.

Student AC launched their only noteworthy move of the session two minutes later, as Md Sajid showed deft stickwork to get past three rival defenders, but then scooped the ball over the bar.

Institute scored immediately after crossing over, as Peter Leonard converted a penalty corner, but thereafter they seemed a bit relaxed. However, Students AC failed to seize the advantage, with their players looking tired.

The final tally became 8-0 nine minutes from time when Qadir essayed a measured square pass to Parvez who finished off comfortably.
