Born: October 20 1951, Rome

Playing career: Defender with Roma, Catanzaro, Catania (five years in Serie A).

1985 - First coaching job with amateur side Vigor Lamezia. Top of table and undefeated.

1985 (December) - Coach of Campania in Serie B

1987 - Coach at Cagliari in Serie C. Rebuilt team and won promotion in successive seasons to Serie A.

1991 - To Napoli where he promoted Gianfranco Zola to first team to replace Diego Maradona. Fourth place finish.

1993 - Takes over Fiorentina in Serie B.

1994 - Wins Serie B and promotion with Fiorentina.

1996 - Wins Italian Cup.

1997 - Takes his reputation for building teams to Spanish side Valencia.

1999 - Wins Spanish Cup with Valencia who finish fourth to qualify for Champions League.

1999 - To Atletico Madrid but his tenure at the troubled club is brief and he leaves after they go into administration in March 2000.

2000 (September) - Replaces Gianluca Vialli at Chelsea, where he teams up again with Zola.

2002 - Losing FA Cup finalists v Arsenal.

2003 - Earns fourth-place finish and spot in Champions League.

2003-2004 - After new Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich takes over in July 2003, Ranieri suffers constant speculation over his future. Club spends more than $200 million (109 million pounds) on new players.

Earns sobriquet Tinkerman for his squad rotation policies.

Steers Chelsea to second in the league, their highest position for 49 years, and to the Champions League semi-finals where they are beaten by Monaco.
