Unseeded Sandy Gumulya of Indonesia defeated home favourite Rushmi Chakravarthy 6-1, 6-3 in the final to win the $10,000 ITF women's tennis event at the LB Stadium Tennis complex in Hyderabad on Saturday.

The unsung 17-year-old Gumulya capitalised on Chakravarty's mistakes and made the final a smooth looking and one-sided affair right from the word go.

"I played to a strategy and it worked," said the beaming science student from Jakarta.

"I put the ball deep and attacked Rushmi's backhand all the time and it worked."

Gumulya, who troubled Sania Mirza in the recently-held Afro-Asian Games, was at her best in the morning when she played her attacking shots, which whiffed just over the net to the baseline like a bullet.

Chakravarthy, who was injured in the doubles final yesterday, said she had a stiff shoulder and it was not her day.

"I think I have been playing too many matches," she added.

The Indonesian lass, coached by Suzana Anggarkusuma, made her intentions clear, winning the first set, losing just one game.

Amidst cheers from the thin Saturday crowd, Chakravarthy pooled all her energies and experience in the second set to notch three games, but the Indonesian was unstoppable and her cracking form ensured her a 6-3 verdict and the title.

Gumulya earned $1,600 and six WTA points for her effort while Chakravarthy had to be content with $1,000 and four points.

The semi-finalists got $500 and two points each.
