Popat, Gupta get easy draws

India's No. 1 players Aparna Popat and Abhinn Shyam Gupta were handed relatively easy draws in the Indian Oil Asian Satellite Badminton Championships, beginning in Jaipur on Wednesday.

National champion Popat, who is also the top seed in the ladies section, got a first round bye in the 17-player field and will face qualifier Aditi Biswas in the second round.

In the men's section, third seed Gupta will take on 166-ranked Adisak Wirey Aphadungphong in the first round.

Men's top seed Chong Wei Lee, second seed Kay Bin Yeoh of Malaysia and fourth seed Anupap Thirusakul of Thailand have been given byes in the first round.

In the women's section, Singapore's second seed Li Li and third seed Salakjit Polsan of Thailand have been given a bye in the first round.

In the qualifying matches played on Tuesday, C M Shashidhar beat Mayank Behl 15-6, 15-6 while Amar Mohate got the better of Anuj Gupta 15-11, 17-14 to move into the main draw of the men's section.

In the women's section, Biswas defeated Neha Makawa 11-4, 11-6 while Fatima Nazneen saved a match-point in the second game to book a berth in the main draw by defeating Aparna Balan 7-11, 13-10, 11-3.

In the men's doubles, A Pridhvi and P Sunil beat Vicky Jaiswal and J T Anthony 15-5, 15-2 while Jose George and Ajet Vbijaytilak defeated T Dinesh and P Sharatchandra 15-8, 15-6.

In the women's doubles Aparna Balu and Saina Nehwal trounced Aditi Biswas and B Sailakshmi 15-3, 15-2 while Trupti Murgunde and Fatima Nazneen defeated Deepti Ranjan and Parul Rawat 15-5, 15-8 to make the grade.
