Indian girls followed in the footsteps of the boys and exited at the quarterfinal stage in Asia-Oceania qualification tie of the ITF World Junior Tennis championship in Melbourne on Friday.

They lost their doubles match against Japan, G K Swetha and Ashmita Easwaramurthy going down to Ayumi Morita and Emiko in straight sets 0-6, 2-6.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the singles on Thursday when rain interrupted play.

Top four teams qualify for the world finals to be played in August in Czech Republic.

Later in the day, the Indians recovered from the disappointment to defeat Indonesia 2-1 in the play-off matches for the 5-8 positions.

Swetha defeated Viven Silfany 6-4, 6-1 and Ashmitha won 6-3, 6-3 against Lutfiana Aris in the singles. Ashmita and Gayathri Krishnan lost the doubles 0-6, 2-6 to Miasacca and Silfany.

The team will play Chinese Taipei tomorrow to compete for the 5th spot.
