Anwar Sultan bags trap gold

India's Anwar Sultan pipped World champion Al-Mudhaf Khaled of Kuwait in a tie-shoot to clinch the gold medal in the men's trap event in the Asian Clay Shooting championship in Delhi on Thursday.

Sultan, who beat Al-Mudaf 5-4 in the tie-breaker after the top three tied at 142 points, also ensured the India, also comprising Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Mansher Singh, the team gold.

Sultan and Al-Mudhaf shot an identical 118 in the preliminary round and 24 in the final.

Sandhu, in fact, had the highest score in the preliminary rounds, shooting 120 out of 125, but his final score of 22 saw the other two catching up with him.

In the tie-shoot, Sandhu missed the second bird and had to be content with the bronze medal.

Mansher Singh fired 115, thus giving India a combined tally of 353 points (120+118+115) in the team event for the top position. Kuwait won the silver with 346 points while UAE took bronze with 341.

In the skeet event, Saeed Al-Maktoum of UAE won the gold medal with 148 points, equalling the world record in the preliminary round on the way. Al-Maktoum fired 125/125 in the preliminaries before shooting 23/25 in the final.

Al-Attiya Nasser of Qatar and Zaid Almutairi of Kuwait shot a total of 147 each but the former took the silver after winning the tie-break 4-2.
