England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year after his drop goal against Australia won the rugby World Cup for England.

Wilkinson's kick clinched a 20-17 extra time victory in the final in Sydney last month as England became the first northern hemisphere side to win the World Cup.

The 24-year-old, who last month was named the International Rugby Board's (IRB) player of the year, was chosen on Sunday ahead of England captain and team mate Martin Johnson and world marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe, who won the award last year.

Asked how he felt immediately after his winning drop kick Wilkinson recalled: "I was just saying World Cup, World Cup".

England's rugby team were named as Team of the Year after that World Cup success and victory in the Six Nations championships and Clive Woodward won Coach of the Year.

Cyclist Lance Armstrong, who won a fifth consecutive Tour de France this year, was Overseas Sports Personality of the Year.

On the 50th anniversary of the awards five-times Olympic rowing champion Steve Redgrave got a Golden Sports Personality award chosen from the winners over the last 49 years, while England's 1966 world soccer champions were Team of the Decades.
