Feofanova dominates Stockholm meet with world record

Russia's Svetlana Feofanova set a world indoor pole vault record of 4.72 metres at a meeting in Stockholm on Wednesday.

The Russian beat the previous record of 4.71 which she established in Stuttgart on Sunday, leaving former record holder Stacy Dragila of the United States well behind in second place.

The American cleared 4.47 before failing at 4.57.

China's Gao Shuying and Russia's Yelena Belyakova shared third on 4.37.

"Technically, I was not as good as in Stuttgart," Feofanova said afterwards.

"I wasn't as relaxed and didn't feel fresh in my legs. The conditions were unusual, and it took time to adapt.

"The runway was not entirely stable and I wasn't quite myself in it. I don't think Stacy was able to adapt to the runway either."

In the men's 60 metres, South Africa's Morne Nagel maintained his impressive form so far this season by winning in a time of 6.53 seconds.

NARROWLY AHEAD

American Brian Lewis was second in 6.62, narrowly ahead of third-placed veteran Frankie Fredericks of Namibia (6.63).

Russia's Yevgeniy Pechonkin won the 60 metres hurdles, clocking a time of 7.54 seconds.

China's Xiang Liu finished second in 7.61 with Austria's Elmar Lichtenegger third in 7.63.

In men's field events, Swedes Staffan Strand and Christian Olsson both triumphed after setting personal bests.

Strand won the men's high jump at 2.35 metres, ahead of world number one and compatriot Stefan Holm (2.29) and third-placed Dutchman Wilbert Pennings (2.25).

Olsson won the triple jump with a distance of 17.28 metres. Italy's Fabrizio Donato placed second with 16.76 while Russian Igor Spasovkhodskiy was third in 16.53.

In the women's 800 metres, Austria's Stephanie Graf edged out Mozambique's Maria Mutola to win with a time of 1:59.51.

Mutola had to settle for second place in 2:00.09 while Germany's Yvonne Teichmann was third in 2:01.89.

"I'm very happy with the race," Graf said. "It was an easy race and I didn't even get tired. I felt so fresh that I decided to kick at 250 metres."

In the women's 1,500 metres, Ethiopian Berhane Adere set the fastest time of the season with 4:05.54.

Slovenia's Helena Javornik came second in 4:08.10 and Alesya Turova of the Belarus was third in 4:08.81.
