Greene shakes off injury to win in London

World record holder Maurice Greene showed no signs of a left knee injury that has plagued him in recent weeks as he clocked 9.98 seconds to comfortably win the 100 metres at the London grand prix on Sunday, 22nd July.

"The knee is not too bad, it's improving and the faster I run the less pain I feel," said the American, who pulled out of Friday's Monaco Golden League meeting to rest it.

"I've been training very hard recently, and it's starting to show. I am beginning to get ready for the world championships."

The race, run into a slight headwind, was held up by two false starts, but Greene said this had not affected him.

"I don't worry about the starts," said Greene who celebrates his 27th birthday on Monday.

"We practise starts all the time and in this event you have to get used to dealing with false starts."

The race at Crystal Palace was Greene's last competitive outing before the world championships which begin in Edmonton, Canada on August 3, where he will defend his 100 and 200 metres titles.

Britain's Dwain Chambers was second in 10.11 and Bernard Williams of the United States was third in 10.13.

Chambers was pleased with his performance.

"Technically I was fine today and coming second to Maurice is a good boost before the world championships," he said.

"Maurice is clearly in good form, but then he always is."
