55-member squad for Asiad camps

The Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI) has named a squad of 55, 24 of them women, for preparation camps in connection with the Bangkok Asian Games scheduled for December.

The squad as announced, reads:

Men: 100m: Rajeev Balakrishnan, Amit Khanna, Vikram Singh, Anand Menezes and Sidharth Basak.

400m: Paramjeet Singh, Lijo David Thottan, P. Ramachandran, Jata Shankar, K.G. Manojlal, Prabhjot Singh and Dinesh Rawat.

5000m/10,000m/3000m steeplechase: Bahadur Prasad, Gulab Chand, Harish Tiwari, T.A. Shivananda, Arun D'Souza, B.S. Lone and Avtar Singh.

Shot Put: Shakti Singh, Bahadur Singh and Manjit Singh.

Discus throw: Ajit Bhaduria, Anil Kumar and Hridayanand Singh.

Javelin: Satvir Singh, Jagdish Bishnoi and Daljeet Singh.

Hammer: Pramod Tiwari, Virendar Poonia and Shubhdeep Singh.

Women: 100m/200m/400m: P.T. Usha, Rachita Mistry, Saraswati Dey, Vinita Tripathi, V. Jayalakshmi, Gincy Philip, Davinder Kaur, E.B. Shyla, V. Pandeeswari and Jaicy Thomas.

400/800m: K.C. Rosakutty.

800m/1500m: Jyotirmoyee Sikdar and K.M. Beenamol.

Shot put: Amandeep Kaur, Harbans Kaur and Harpreet Kaur.

Discus: Neelam J. Singh, Sugan Yadav, Harjeet Kaur and Swarnjeet Kaur.

Javelin: Gurmeet Kaur.

The only exclusion from the squad that took part in the 12th Asian Championships recently at Fukukoa, Japan, is hammer thrower Surinderjeet Kaur.

Releasing the schedule of the camps, AAFI officials said the main camp would begin at Patiala on August 3, continuing on till the final selection trials, which will be conducted during the all-India inter-state meet from November 18 to 20.

The camps for different events will also be held at Calcutta, Delhi, Ranikhet, or Shilaroo. For throwers, the camps will be at Patiala (Aug 3 to Oct 19), Calcutta (Oct 21 to Nov 20) and Patiala (Nov 21 to Dec 4). For sprinters it is Patiala (Aug 3 to Sept 19), Delhi (Sept 20 to Oct 19), Calcutta (Oct 21 to Nov 20) and Delhi again (Nov 21 to Dec 4). For middle and long distance runners, the camps are at Patiala (Aug 3 to Sept 3), at Ranikhet/Shilaroo (Sept 5 to Oct 5), Delhi (Oct 6 to 19), Calcutta (Oct 21 to Nov 20) and Delhi again (Nov 21 to Dec 4).

The different venues have been selected keeping in mind competition programmes including the National Games in Manipur (Oct 4 to 14), the national circuit meet in Mumbai (Oct 20), the Open National in Calcutta (Nov 3 to 5) and the inter-state meet at Jamshedpur (Nov 18 to 20).

Three women -- M.K. Asha (400m/400m hurdles), Bobby Aloysius (high jump) and G.G. Prameela (heptathlon) -- have been permitted to train in Bangalore. They will move to Calcutta on October 10 and will be in Delhi from November 21 to December 4.
