Laver out of critical list

Tennis legend Rod Laver recovered consciousness, and was taken off the critical list, a day after he was rushed into intensive care at the UCLA Medical Centre following a stroke while being interviewed for television.

Doctors attending the almost-60 tennis ace said that while he is not entirely out of the woods, the prognoscis is good. Despite difficulty speaking, and problem moving his right arm and right leg, there was no danger of paralysis.

The tennis Hall of Fame-r, however, will remain in the hospital under careful observation for at least a week.

ESPN spokesman Rob Tobias said that Laver was being interviewed, for a series on the 20 greatest athletes of the 20th century, at the Westwood Marquis Hotel near UCLA when he suddenly developed a severe headache, began slurring his words and started having trouble with his right hand.

The crew promptly sought medical attention, and the proximity of UCLA, just a couple of blocks away, ensured his speedy admittance and prompt treatment.
