Tangerine Terminators thrash Black Sticks

The Netherlands beat New Zealand 3-1 to record their second successive win at the hockey World Cup in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The Tangerine Terminators, thrice world champions, had beaten Argentina 3-0 in their opening match on Monday.

The win help them to go atop the pool with six points from two games.

 

The Dutch were just too good

It was supposed to be a cakewalk for the Europeans, but it was the Black Sticks who surprisingly took the lead in the opening minute, Phillip Burrows latching on to a good cross from Steven Edwards.

The Dutch responded immediately, in the next minute itself, veteran Ronald Brouwer scoring from close range.

Five minutes later Taeke Taekema, the tournament's top scorer following his hat-trick against South Africa, added one more to his tally doing what he does best -- a spectacular penalty-corner conversion.

As the Black Sticks tried desperately to secure an equaliser, the Tangerine Terminators took advantage of their defensive frailties, and Jeroen Hertzberger put them 3-1 up seven minutes before the breather.

Their was no change to the scoreline in the second half.

Korea edge past Argentina

Drag-flicker Hyun Woo Nam scored in the dying moments as a resilient Korea came back from a goal down to beat a fighting Argentina 2-1 in their second Pool A match.

Lee Nam Yong (62 minutes) scored the equaliser while Hyun (70th) converted a penalty corner just 54 seconds from the hooter to give Korea full three points from the match.

Korea showed great fighting spirit and scored two goals within last 10 minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

The Asian champions sparkled in the final 15 minutes of the match, which was mainly dominated by Argentina for most part of the day.

Argentina were the more attacking side

Facundo Callioni scored the lone goal for Argentina in the 53rd minute.

Argentina were the more attacking side in the first half as they had two big scoring chances in the initial two minutes but on both the occasion the forwardline disappointed.  

Germany blank Canada 6-0

Defending champions Germany toyed with Canada before subjecting them to a 6-0 plastering in their second Pool A match.

Playing a fast-paced and one-touch hockey, the reigning Olympic champions and world number one side dictated terms for most part of the match which they led 4-0 at the breather.

Canada, ranked 10 places below Germany at the FIH chart, gave a stiff fight after the breather but still conceded two goals in the second session.

For Germany, who had drawn 2-2 with South Korea in their opening match, 18-year-old Florian Fuchs scored twice in the 58th and 64th minutes while Benjamin Wess (3rd), Jan-Marco Motag (21st), captain Maximillian Muller (23rd), Martin Haner (28th) found the target once each.
