Manchester United fans had reportedly besieged the house of striker Wayne Rooney reportedly in protest at his decision to quit the club.

Police dispersed the crowd late on Thursday after a mob of up to 30 supporters descended on the star's seven-million-dollar mansion in Prestbury, close to Manchester.

According to the Guardian, the group had gathered outside Rooney's house in Prestbury, Cheshire, with a banner reading "If you join City you're dead".

waytne rooneyThe incident occurred a couple of hours after a day-long crisis meeting at the club failed to resolve the future of Rooney.

"We are aware there is intense public and media interest on the club at the moment. I can confirm a number of meetings have taken place, including with the player's representative," United Chief Executive David Gill said.

"The outcome of those meetings will become clear in the near future. In the meantime fans are asked to be patient," he added.

Fans have been incensed by the news, and reports that the striker could be snapped up by local arch rivals Manchester City have only added to their sense of betrayal.

According to reports, Rooney is considering his options, and has told team-mates that he would not baulk at a move to Manchester City.

It is also believed that the striker is keen to force the issue before the January transfer window.

The balaclava-clad fans arrived at Rooney's house -- which he shares with his wife Coleen and son Kai -- in a convoy of cars and repeatedly buzzed on his intercom, reported Britain's Sun newspaper.

They warned the striker not to sign for Man City before police arrived and threatened to arrest them unless they dispersed, said the paper. Six security guards reportedly came to stand watch at the house after the incident.

The former Everton player, whose current deal expires in June 2012, is understood to be angling for a pay hike to 200,000 pounds a week.

The amount would make him the highest paid player in the Premier League.
