Hosts India were in for a major shock on Wednesday when their athlete Rani Yadav failed a doping test at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Yadav had finished sixth in the 20-km walk with a timing of 1 hour, 42 minutes and 54 seconds.

The Commonwealth Games Federation confirmed that the 20-year-old tested positive for banned substance norandrosterone.

"The CGF can now confirm that the A sample of Ms Rani Yadav, a competitor in the women's 20 kilometre road race on October 9, 2010, was found to contain 19-Norandrosterone, a prohibited Anabolic Agent under category S1 of the WADA List of Prohibited Substances and Methods," the CGF said in a statement.

"Ms Yadav has been provisionally suspended from the Games and, in accordance with the ADS, the athlete will attend, or be represented, at a Provisional Hearing before the CGF Federation Court later today."

Earlier, CGF chief Michael Fennell had confirmed that one Indian athlete had failed the doping test but did not disclose the name.

"We are not declaring the name of the athlete right now as per the anti-doping procedures. As of now, we can tell you that it is in athletics and the country is India.

We will only give out the name once we have spoken to the athlete. We have already informed the Indian chef-de-mission, who will then inform the athlete and once we get the confirmation we will make the name public," Fennell said.

This is the third incident of an athlete failing in the doping test. Earlier, two Nigerian sprinters -- Samuel Okon and Osayemi Oludamola -- had tested positive for banned stimulant methylhexanamine.

"It's very unfortunate," Lalit Bhanot, secretary general of the organising committee said in a news conference.

"We tried our level best. Not only the federations but also the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) tried with our out of competition tests.

"The government is very serious about these things. One can't be controlled if the person is trying to take some forbidden substance to enhance their performance," he added.

More than 1,300 tests had been performed until the end Tuesday, Fennell said, and there have been three positive tests.

This is the third incident of an athlete failing in the doping test in the on-going Games. Earlier, two Nigerian sprinters -- Samuel Okon and Osayemi Oludamola -- had tested positive for banned stimulant methylhexanamine.
