Sharath Kamal among three Indians in QF

Olympian Achanta Sharath Kamal was among three Indians who qualified for the men's singles quarter-finals, even as the Indian women's challenge in the individual events ended in the Commonwealth Games Table Tennis competition on Monday.

Besides Sharath, A Amalraj and Soumyadeep Roy also entered the last-eight stage.

All the five women paddlers, including reigning National champion Poulomi Ghatak, crashed out.

For second seed Sharath, it has been an easy journey so far, and in the pre-quarter-finals also, he easily overcame G Rumgay of Scotland 4-1.

He won the best-of-seven tie 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6.

Earlier, after getting a bye in the first round, the Chennai paddler thrashed S Overmeyer of South Africa 4-0 en route to the round of 16.

The Indian ace will take on Singapore's Ma Liang in the semi-finals.

Liang thrashed England's Darius Knight 4-0.

However, it was not that easy for Amalraj and Roy, who beat M Yiangou of Cyprus and Australia's W Henzell respectively with an identical 4-3 scoreline.

Amalraj, who defeated Australian Justin Han in the previous round, will face top seed Gao Ning of Singapore on Tuesday.

The world number 17 Singaporean beat Andrew Baggaley of England 4-0 in another match.

Roy also plays another Singaporean, Xiaoli Cai, who beat Daniel Reed 4-0.

Former national champion Subhajit Saha and Abishek Ravichandran, however, went down to Zi Yang (0-4) of Singapore and British P Drinkhall (3-4) respectively in the pre-quarter-finals stage.

For Indian woman singles players it was a forgettable day. Out of five, only two -- Madhurika Patkar and Mouma Das -- could enter the round of 16 but failed to move further.

Madhurika put up a fight but lost 2-4 to Tianwei Feng of Singapore 2-4, while former India No 1 Mouma proved no match for another Singaporean Mengyu Yu, who beat her 4-0.

Poulomi, after getting a bye in the first round, went down fighting to N Liu of Nigeria 3-4, while Mamta Prabhu found her nemesis in another Singaporean, Jiawei Li, and was blown away 0-4. K Shamini lost 2-4 to Canada's M Zhang in the round of 32.

In the men's doubles, Sharath and Saha beat the Australian pair of Han and Simon Gerada 4-0 to storm into the semi-finals.

They now play Nigeria's Aruna Akinade and A Seun, who beat South African pair Shane Overmeyer and T S Cogill 3-1, in the Tuesday's semi-finals.

The Indians were followed by compatriots Amalraj and Roy, who overcame Guyana's David Paul Anthony and E Lewis 3-0.

But, in the final-four stage, the Indian pair have a tough job on hand as they face the Singaporean duo of Gao and Yang, who beat Wales' Jenkins duo -- Ryan and Stephen -- in the quarter-finals.
