Sania crashes out of Wimbledon singles

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza crashed out in the first round of the women's singles at Wimbledon after slumping to a straight set defeat against Angelique Kerber of Germany on Monday.

The 113-ranked Sania, who is making a comeback to the courts after a three-month injury lay-off, lost 4-6, 1-6 to the 55-ranked Kerber in little more than an hour.

Sania, who recently married Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik, still has a chance to make amends for the opening round loss in the singles as she will compete in the doubles of the grass court Grand Slam, partnering Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

The Indo-Dane duo will be up against Anne Keothavong and Melanie South of Great Britain in the opening round.

Meanwhile, the magic of securing her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros earlier this month faded fast for Italian Francesca Schiavone as the fifth seed suffered a first-round exit to Russian Vera Dushevina.

Schiavone, a quarter-finalist last year, was tamed 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 by an opponent who dug in and matched the hard-hitting Italian toe-to-toe throughout a contest that ended six minutes short of three hours.

Roger Federer was given a scare by Colombian firebrand Alejandro Falla before prevailing 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-0.

Falla was expected to be cannon fodder, an obliging punch bag, as the top seed oiled his wheels at the start of a challenge for a record-equalling seventh men's singles title here but he almost scored one of the greatest shocks ever seen on the rectangle of green turf.

Men's third seed Novak Djokovic then survived a similar fate, reeling off the last six games to beat tricky Belgian Olivier Rochus 4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Russia's seventh seed Nikolay Davydenko also went two sets down against South Africa's Kevin Anderson before clawing back to win 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 9-7.

Marin Cilic, the 11th seed, fell to Germany's Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 but there were few alarms for 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt and 2009 runner-up Andy Roddick as they reached the second round.
