Rafael Marquez capitalised on some poor defending and picked his spot to score the equaliser and save Mexico the blushes in the tournament opener of the 2010 World Cup against South Africa in Johannesburg on Friday.
The Kaizer Chiefs' midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala had put the hosts ahead in the 55th minute.
Marquez, the first Mexican signed by Barcelona thanks to distinguished performances for the national team and AS Monaco, will retire after at the World Cup.
After a goalless first half, South Africa sent the near-capacity crowd into a frenzy by taking the lead barely five minutes into the second session, Tshabalala producing a gem of a goal.
After receiving a superb through pass, the midfielder found space in the Mexican defence and dispatched a left-footed pile-driver that sailed past Mexican custodian Oscar Perez.
But the euphoria of taking the lead did not last long as the Mexicans scored the equaliser in the 79th minute when defender Marquez found the target. The goal was the result of a measured cross from Andres Guardado, following a corner. An unmarked Marquez latched on to the ball, took his time and slotted home from close, giving custodian Itumeleng Khune no chance whatsoever.
The 31-year-old is a key element in the national team since his debut in 1997.
With Barcelona, Marquez won three La Liga titles, three Spanish Super Cups, two Champions Leagues and the Spanish King's Cup.
Despite his achievements, the defender does not feel widely acknowledged at home.
"Unfortunately, in Mexico I am not recognised for what I have achieved and what I am doing for the country but this doesn't worry me. I always try to be the same person," Marquez said in an interview ahead of the World Cup.
Today, all of Mexico will remember him. He salvaged what could be a crucial point.
