Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, on Wednesday announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 crore for the national hockey players and also offered to sponsor the team for the next two years.
Annoyed by the official apathy, the hockey players had pulled out of the World Cup preparatory camp before reaching an agreement with the Hockey India on Wednesday.
"The state government is also ready to sponsor the hockey team for the next two years with an objective of supporting the team and its players," Mayawati said in a statement in Lucknow.
She said that her government was committed to promote sports and sportsmen.
"I hope that the step taken by the state would help the Indian team to perform well at the World Cup and do the country proud," she said while extending her best wishes to the team for their World Cup campaign, starting next month in New Delhi.
