Ace Indian squash player Saurav Ghoshal went down fighting to defending champion Nick Matthews of England in the first round of the $60,000 Swedish Open in Linkoping, Sweden.

Ghoshal, world number 30, fought hard to claw his way back after losing the first two games but the effort wasn't enough against Matthew's precision of strokes and greater speed.

Ghoshal lost 7-11, 4-11, 11-5, 5-11 in 56 minutes in the decider at the Linkoping Sporthall court.

Meanwhile, in the latest rankings issued by the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Ghoshal dropped a rung to be placed at 30th on the professional circuit.

The Kolkata-player has accumulated 1860.00 points from 14 tournaments he played last year. He had reached a career-high 29th in the previous edition of PSA World rankings.

Veteran Ritwik Bhattacharya ranking also dropped 113 to 116. Other Indians Siddharth Suchde and Harinder Pal Sandhu are placed at 97th and 108th respectively.

Among women, world's youngest ever player to win a WISPA title, Anaka Alankamony has moved up nine places to achieve her career-best ranking of 78.

Joshna Chinappa dropped a place to be placed 35th but Dipika Pallikal managed to hold on to her 46th position.
