Scotch flavour for Delhi Games

August 18, 2010 20:31 IST

Grace ReidYoung Grace Reid and 72-year-old Willie Wood will be hoping to make history after being named in the 191-member Scotland squad for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi from October 3 to 14.

At 14 years of age, diver Reid, who finished in a remarkable fourth at the European Championships last week in the 3m springboard individual event, will be the youngest competitor representing Scotland in India.

Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) on Wednesday named the 191 athletes (108 men and 83 women) selected for Scotland to compete at the Delhi Games.

The size of the team is significantly bigger than the 166 selected for the last edition of the Games in Melbourne four years ago.

Olympic cycling silver medallist Ross Edgar is another star athlete for the Scots, who also boast of several World and European champions, including swimmer Hannah Miley, David Carry and Caitlin McClatchey, a double gold medallist from Melbourne.

The legendary Wood, who was won four medals, will be making a record eighth appearance at the Commonwealth Games. He first represented Scotland at the 1974 Commonwealth Games, when he took the bronze singles medal in Christchurch -- three decades after he took up the sport.

Shooter Ian Marsden is another who will be hoping to bring his experience after being named in the Scotland squad for his seventh Games appearance.

Despite controversies dogging the Delhi Games, with reports of corruption and new venues not up to the mark, the Scots have decided to take part in 16 out of 17 disciplines, with only netball being not represented.

There are also some new sports on the programme in tennis and women's wrestling, whilst archery makes a long awaited return to the Games.

The athletes will be supported by a staff of 91, comprising team management, coaches, medical and sports science support, including doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists, physiologists and performance analysts.
