Australia names tennis squad for CWG 2010

August 18, 2010 20:46 IST

Peter Luczak and Anastasia Rodionova will spearhead Australia's challenge at the tennis event of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi as Tennis Australia on Wednesday named its squad, sans Lleyton Hewitt and Samatha Stosur.

Former world number one Hewitt and this year's French Open finalist Stosur had decided long time back to give the October 3-14 Games a miss as it clashes with ranking ATP/WTA events.

The other top women players -- Jarmila Groth (ranked 64), Jelena Dokic (82) and Alicia Molik (89) are also not named in the squad as they have recently decided to skip the quadrennial event.

Luczak, ranked 121, is the number two men's Australian player and Rodionova, world number 62, is the women's number second-best player.

Matt Ebden, big-serving young Greg Jones and experienced Davis Cup doubles specialist Paul Hanley are the other members of the men's team.

While Sally Peers and Olivia Rogowska join Rodionova in the women's team along with Jessica Moore.

"We have a balanced blend of experience, talent and youthful exuberance that will hold us in good shape against the other Commonwealth nations. We will definitely be aiming for medals," Australian coach Scott Draper said.

Last year, Australia had refused to send its Davis Cup team to India citing security concerns and were subsequently fined US $10000, while India were given a walkover.
