Indian lifters sweep team trophies

The Indian weightlifting squad, which won a whopping 27 medals, including 17 gold, in the Commonwealth Senior and Junior Championships in Malaysia made a clean sweep of the team trophies.

The 29-member squad won the team championship trophies in senior men, senior women, junior men and junior women. They also took home all the best lifter trophies but missed out in the senior men's category.

Soniya Chanu (48kg) was adjudged best lifter in senior women's category, while Sukhen Dey (56kg) and Bangaru Usha (48kg) impressed in the junior men and junior women sections.

"Our lifters put up a sterling performance. They made a clean sweep by winning all team trophies. With almost every medal in the bag, this was the icing on the cake," Indian Weightlifting Federation Secretary General BR Gulati said.

India won 17 gold, nine silver and a bronze in the competition with only two lifters returning without a medal.

Krishna Veni, in 53kg senior women, finished fourth while Velu Prabhu - senior men 77kg -withdrew due to a muscle tear before the competition.
