Big-spending Manchester City missed the chance to move into the Premier League top four when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic on Sunday.

City remained in fifth spot with 17 points from eight matches, five behind champions Manchester United who top the table having played one more game.

Fierce local rivals Blackburn Rovers and Burnley squared up in the top flight of English football for the first time in 43 years at Ewood Park and Rovers edged a gripping Lancashire derby 3-2.

Burnley made a dream start when Robbie Blake sent an unstoppable long-range shot past Rovers keeper Paul Robinson in the fifth minute.

David Dunn silenced the visiting fans when he equalised four minutes later before Franco Di Santo, on loan from Chelsea, headed Rovers in front and Pascal Chimbonda made it 3-1 just before the interval.

Burnley created several opportunities to get back into the game in the second half and Chris Eagles gave them hope late on but Rovers survived to take the points.
