Gawli, Naik suspended for skipping national camp

November 29, 2009 20:27 IST

The All India Football Federation on Sunday suspended Mahesh Gawli and Sameer Naik for missing a national camp on a direction from their I-League club Dempo. Their fate will be decided by a disciplinary committee before the start of the Federation Cup next month.

Dempo had stopped Gawli and Naik from joining the senior national camp in Goa earlier this month, claiming they were recuperating from their respective knee and hamstring injuries.

"The All India Football Federation's emergency committee on Sunday suspended Gawli and Naik and the matter has been further referred to the disciplinary committee," AIFF general secretary Alberto Colaco said after the meeting.

"The committee will meet shortly to take a final decision on both the players and would also take a decision whether an action will be taken against the club. The decision will be taken before the Federation Cup," he added.

Meanwhile, the AIFF has appointed Sunando Dhar, General Manager (sales and marketing) of Leisure Sports management Company, as the CEO of I-League.

The AIFF also decided to organise the Federation Cup from December 20 to January 3.
