November 18, 2009 22:15 IST

Ace Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal, Chetan Anand and Arvind Bhat notched up contrasting wins to advance to the second round of the singles events in the China Super Series in Shanghai Wednesday.

Seventh seed Saina brushed aside Canadian Charmaine Reid 21-6, 21-12 in 25 minutes in the women's singles.

In the men's singles, Chetan struggled past Valeriy Atrachenkov of Ukraine 22-20, 25-23 in a 35-minute battle, while Arvind beat Korean Wan Ho Shon 21-18, 21-16 in 39 minutes.

However, it was curtains for India in the doubles category. Indian men's doubles pair of Rupesh Kumar and Thomas Sanave went down to Danish combo of Henriksen Kasper Faust and Anders Kristiansen 19-21, 12-21 in 34 minutes.

But it was Indian best doubles player Jwala Gutta, who had the most disappointing day.

Jwala and V Diju couldn't go through the whole match and retired after 17-minutes into the match, against Korean combo of Baek Cheol Shin and Min Jung Kim when the score read 21-14 11-3 in the rivals favour.

Jwala and her partner Ashwini Ponnappa also did not turn up in doubles event and gave a walk over to their eighth seeded opponent Yu Chin Chien and Pei Rong Wang of Chinese Taipei.
