Maradona to launch sports cafe in Dubai

May 19, 2009 15:16 IST

Argentine football legend Diego Maradona is planning to launch the world's first Maradona Sports Cafe in Dubai by next year.

According to a report in the Arabian Business magazine, the cafe -- modelled on Planet Hollywood - will feature memorabilia from the Argentine World Cup winner's playing career and will also include items from other soccer stars such as Brazilian heroes Pele, Zico and Dunga.

The cafe will be developed by UAE property tycoon Sulaiman Al Fahim, the architect behind last year's Manchester City takeover.

Although no date has been set, Maradona himself is expected to attend the opening. Maradona's cousin Remigio Martin told the magazine that the cafe will cater to a lot of things related to football.

"It will be dedicated to soccer, with  creens showing World Cup goals, and shirts, balls, gloves and other items donated by people like Pele," he added.

Remigio - who is a Permanent Observer to the UN Economic and Social Council - informed that a portion of the revenue from the cafe would be used in the global battle against malnutrition.

"This cafe will be a good way to use the Maradona name, and the support of many of the world's greatest footballers, to attract attention to our cause and also help support it financially," Remigio said.
