English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion suspended their Czech international striker Roman Bednar on Sunday after newspaper allegations of his involvement in a drugs deal.

The club, who lost 2-0 to Liverpool on Sunday and were relegated from the Premier League, confirmed his suspension in a statement on their website (www.wba.co.uk).

West Brom's move came after the News of the World published a report and five photos of Bednar on Sunday allegedly handing over cash for drugs.

"Roman Bednar has been suspended while the club conduct an internal investigation into the matter," the club's statement said.

Bednar, 26, joined West Brom from Heart of Midlothian in August 2007 initially on loan before the deal was made permanent last summer for 2.3 million pounds. He scored 17 goals as they won promotion to the Premier League last season.

He has scored six goals this season but had not played in the club's last five matches before being left out of the squad for Sunday's match.
