Mexico crush US to win Gold Cup

July 27, 2009 10:52 IST

The United States suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat by Mexico in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Giants Stadium on Sunday.

The victory gave Mexico a record fifth Gold Cup title and was their first victory away to the U.S since 1999.

After having the better of the opening half, the US fell behind in the 56th minute when Giovani Dos Santos went down under challenge from Jay Heaps and Jamaican referee Courtney Campbell awarded a penalty.

Mexico skipper Gerardo Torrado confidently beat U.S keeper Troy Perkins with the spot kick and the Americans, who have fielded a second strength team in the tournament, promptly fell to pieces.

Dos Santos, in inspirational form, made it 2-0 and provided the pass to substitute Carlos Vela for the third.

Vela, who had transformed the game after coming as a halftime substitute, then set up Jose Antonio Castro for the fourth and the U.S's misery was compounded when defender Heaps was sent off in the 88th minute for a second yellow card.

In-stoppage time Guillermo Franco struck the fifth for Mexico with the U.S defence all at sea.

The pair are due to meet again on Aug. 12 in a World Cup qualifier at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
