Somdev Devvarman is one step away from realising a long-cherished dream of playing in a Grand Slam singles main draw.
The Indian Davis Cupper reached the final round of the US Open qualifying tournament following a hard-earned win over Igor Sijsling at Flushing Meadows in New York on Thursday night.
Somdev beat his Dutch opponent 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 in a two-hour 19 minutes second round encounter.
Saving break-points was the key to Somdev's victory; he staved off as many as six out of eight of them while converting four of five on his opponent's serve.
He will next play Poland's Jerzy Janowicz, ranked 229 on ATP chart, for a berth in the singles main draw.
