Insat-2E launch slated for early 1998

The last of the second generation indigenous communication satellite -- Insat-2e -- will be launched early next year.

The satellite, similar to Insat-2A and Insat-2B, powered by solar energy, is expected to show capabilities comparable to or exceeding any other satellite in the Indian Ocean and in the Asia-Pacific region. The communication payload will have 16 to 20 C band transponders and the meteorological payload would consist of a very high resolution radiometer, a camera, a 406 Mhz data collection transponder and a search and rescue payload.

The satellite's design ensures compatibility with available commercial launch vehicles. It is also configured around an central aluminum cylinder with supports across it. Two equipment panels on the north and south faces accommodate the majority of the sub system and payload modules. There were two extra panels placed on the side viewing earth as well as the side facing the other direction.

The satellite will weigh around 1100 kg. The orbital life of the satellite is expected to be around 14 years. It is to be placed at 83 degree east and its footprint is expected to cover the Asia-Australia land mass, extending from Australia to Russia in the north-south direction and Japan to central Europe in the east-west direction.
