Cop killed in mob attack in Karnataka

A 500-strong mob attacked a Karnataka State Reserve Police party, resulting in the death of a head constable and serious injuries to 11 others after a cyclist died at Jodi Hosahally in Chikmangalur district on Friday after being knocked down by the bus in which they were travelling.

Police burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to quell violence that broke out after the cyclist was knocked down by the bus. The cyclist succumbed to his injuries at hospital.

The people of the village and neighbouring villages gathered in strength and started attacking the KSRP personnel with clubs and stones. The head constable who sustained head injuries died and others were undergoing treatment in hospital.

Senior officials rushed to the spot. The situation was tense but under control. The KSRP personnel were returning from bandobust duty.
