106 in fray for legislative council pollAs many as 106 candidates, including a rebel Janata Dal candidate, are in the fray for the December 29 biennial election to fill 25 seats in the Karnataka legislative council from the local authorities constituencies. Among the contestants are Union Human Resources Development Minister S R Bommai's son B Basavaraj Bommai (Janata Dal), former minister A M Hindasgeri (Congress). Both are locked in a multi-cornered contest in Dharwad. While the Janata Dal has fielded its candidates in 21 constituencies, the Congress and the BJP in 20 each and the Lok Shakti in 16. The number of candidates contesting from different districts are: Bidar (six), Gulbarga (four), Uttara Kannada (six), Dharwad (six), Raichur (four), Bellary (four), Tumkur (seven), Shimoga (10), Dakshina Kannada (six), Hassan ( four), Bangalore Urban (five), Bangalore rural (five), Kolar (four), Mysore (eight), Kodagu (three), Bijapur (four), Belgaum (eight), Mandya (three), Chikmaglur (four) and Chitradurga (four).
