Bangladesh's border skirmish with India -- in which 16 Indian soldiers have been killed -- could not have come at a better time for it. Faced with a general election, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina needed just such a diversion to shake off the tag of 'Indian stooge' that the Opposition had pinned on her.

But for India, the crisis could not have occurred at a worse time. Political rumblings, economic downturn... the nation could have been spared this latest misadventure.
